Remote learning, along with a strict guideline of rules for students, begins Wednesday, Bitterbaum said. The upstate university is the latest in the campus SUNY system to be dealt a blow by the coronavirus. Other SUNY campuses have reached the system's threshold of positive tests over 14 days and switched to remote learning. He said administrators will monitor the two-week period of virtual instruction to see if positive tests among students have fallen to an acceptable level under state and local health department guidelines to resume a hybrid of in-person and remote learning.

The SUNY system ratcheted up efforts to stop the virus from spreading on its campuses last week, introducing new sanctions for students who violate health and safety protocols designed to combat the pandemic.

Ignoring quarantine orders, refusing to wear a mask, and hosting or even attending parties that exceed attendance limits are grounds for punishment under the new rules, which took effect Thursday across SUNY's campuses. Coronavirus: SUNY Cortland switches to remote learning as university passes 100-case threshold

Police say Zachary L. Clark opened fire on the Cortland officer, who applied a tourniquet to his leg at the scene and was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he is listed in stable condition. The officer had been called to 12 Elm St.

Friday for a domestic dispute involving the threatened use of a weapon. He spoke to the man who called in the front yard, then was headed to the door when Clark began firing a semi-automatic.

He continued to fire from the porch, striking the vehicle's windshield. A second officer arrived and began firing at Clark from his vehicle, driving the suspect inside, police said. Marshals Service.

Officials eventually forced Clark from the residence about a. Saturday using a combination of tactics, including chemical irritants, police said.

He will be held for arraignment upon release from the hospital, police said. Clark has been charged with four felonies: first-degree assault, aggravated assault on a police officer, first-degree reckless endangerment and menacing a police officer, as well as two misdemeanor charges. Click here for our special offers.The state Department of Health requires all higher education institutions, including those within the SUNY system, to move to remote learning if they have or more positive COVID tests in their community in a two-week period. While SUNY Cortland said many of the cases are from off-campus students, the two-week shift is designed to prevent further spread of the virus. Residential facilities on the campus will remain open and students will stay on campus for the temporary shift to remote learning, according to officials, and SUNY Cortland will retest every student for the virus and will also increase enforcement of safety standards.

Students who violate the standards could face strict punishment.

To aid with enforcement of the aforementioned rules, Malatras appointed Frank Lawrence, commissioner of SUNY University police, to work with Cortland University police on safety protocol enforcement. While the college shifts to remote learning, it will boost academic support services, SUNY Cortland said in the release.

If cases stabilize and students comply with the safety measures in place, the Cortland County Department of Health can authorize the resumption of in-person learning.
